This device serves two purposes. It has a guillotine type blade for cutting the roll of slide film into individual film chips, and it also has a clear top panel attached via a spring metal arm to hold the slide mount firmly in place while the film chips are positioned and aligned.
Both the left and right sides of the top panel incorporate a grid to assist with the accurate alignment of the film chips in the mount.

The lighting arrangement is quite innovative – it consists of a polished aluminium plate inside the housing which can be adjusted to reflect available light up through the clear panel at the top.
